About Us
The Mohawk Nation Council serves as the traditional and legal government of the Mohawk people, whose sovereignty has been acknowledged by numerous nations across history, including the Netherlands, France, Great Britain, and the United States of America. Its status as a sovereign nation is affirmed by the extensive agreements and treaties established with other governments.
Today, the Mohawk Nation Council remains the lawful custodian of treaties entered into with the United States and other nations and retains title to Mohawk lands. It is essential to distinguish the ancient Mohawk government from entities created by external authorities. Specifically, the St. Regis Tribal Council, established by New York State, does not constitute a sovereign nation; rather, it is an instrument of state governance. The State of New York cannot create sovereign nations, nor can it revoke the inherent sovereignty of the Mohawk Nation Council.
The Mohawk Nation Council stands as the authentic and legitimate government of the Mohawk people. We encourage all individuals and organizations engaging with the Mohawk Nation to exercise due diligence and vigilance against misrepresentation or unauthorized claims regarding the Mohawk Nation Council.
The enduring fire of the Mohawk Nation continues to burn in Akwesasne.

The emblem used by Haudenosaunee members depicts the 50 Confederacy Chiefs joined in a circle, symbolizing their commitment to protecting the people and preserving the ancient system of government. These Chiefs are entrusted with upholding the laws enshrined in the Kaianerakowa (Great Law of Peace), represented by the continually flourishing Tree of Peace at the emblem’s center. The animal clan symbols reflect the familial groups under the Chiefs’ guardianship.
